Saint-Estèphe

Appellation

Saint-Estèphe is an appellation in France, covering 1,554.9 ha in Saint-Estephe. The rules allow red wine. Regional bedrock: unconsolidated sediments. It lies 6 km north of Pauillac and 48 km north of Bordeaux.

The northernmost of the great Médoc communes. More clay in the soil than further south gives firmer wines, with Cos d'Estournel and Montrose as leading estates.
